First Mow of the Season: When to Start & What to Do

Lawn Care Tips By Yard Force RVA

When Should You Start Mowing in Richmond, VA?

Every spring, we get the same question from homeowners across Richmond, Midlothian, and Chesterfield: when is it actually time to start mowing? The short answer is mid-March to early April, but the real answer depends on your grass, not the calendar.

Here in central Virginia, most lawns are either tall fescue (cool-season) or Bermuda grass (warm-season). Cool-season grasses start growing when soil temperatures hit about 45°F, which typically happens in Richmond by mid-March. Warm-season grasses like Bermuda and zoysia wait until soil temps reach 55–60°F, usually late April into May.

The rule is simple: mow when your grass is actively growing and reaches about one-third taller than its ideal height. For most fescue lawns in Henrico, Glen Allen, and Short Pump, that means your first cut happens when the grass hits roughly 4 to 4.5 inches tall.

What to Do Before Your First Mow

Jumping straight into mowing without any prep is a mistake we see constantly. A proper spring cleanup makes a real difference in how your lawn performs through summer. Here's what we recommend before the mower ever touches the grass:

  • Clear debris. Sticks, leaves, and anything that blew in over winter needs to go. Matted leaves smother grass and invite fungal disease.
  • Pick up pet waste. If you have dogs, do a thorough yard sweep. Accumulated waste damages turf and creates bare spots. This is one reason we offer pet waste removal as part of our regular service — and we're the only yard service in central Virginia that applies a professional bio-enzymatic odor and bacteria eliminator after every pickup.
  • Check your mower blade. A dull blade tears grass instead of cutting it cleanly. Torn grass turns brown at the tips and becomes more vulnerable to disease. Sharpen or replace blades before the season starts.
  • Walk your lawn. Look for bare patches, drainage problems, or areas where the soil is compacted. Identifying issues now lets you address them before they get worse.

How to Handle the First Cut

Your first mow sets the tone for the rest of the season. We follow a few rules that apply whether you're in Bon Air, Mechanicsville, or anywhere else in the Richmond metro:

Mow high. Set your mower deck to its highest or second-highest setting — around 3.5 to 4 inches for fescue. Cutting too short in early spring stresses the root system right when the grass is trying to wake up.

Mow dry. Wait for a dry day. Wet grass clumps, clogs your mower, and leads to an uneven cut. Morning dew counts — give it until late morning or early afternoon.

Follow the one-third rule. Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing. If your lawn got away from you and it's 6 inches tall, cut it down to 4 inches, then mow again in a few days to bring it to your target height.

Common Spring Lawn Mistakes to Avoid

We handle lawn care in Richmond, VA year-round, and the same mistakes come up every spring:

  • Mowing too early on warm-season grass. If you have Bermuda or zoysia, mowing before it greens up doesn't help. You're just cutting dead material and exposing the soil to weed seeds.
  • Scalping the lawn. Some homeowners think cutting short means mowing less often. In reality, scalping weakens the turf and gives weeds an open invitation.
  • Skipping the first fertilizer application. Early spring is the right time for a slow-release fertilizer on cool-season lawns. If you're unsure about timing or product, that's something a professional lawn care service can handle for you.
  • Ignoring bare spots. Overseeding bare areas in early spring (before soil temps exceed 70°F) gives cool-season seed its best chance to establish before summer heat arrives.
